Westerly, founded in 1669 by John Babcock, is a beautiful beachfront community tucked into Rhode Island's southwest shore in Washington County and the source of its name as the most westerly of the towns of the state, sitting on the Pawcatuck River, which forms the border with Connecticut. The town's crest boasts three salmon for the Westerly Salmon found in the Pawcatuck River and the fresh and salt water fishing opportunities that abound in the town and surrounding areas. The long white beaches, for which Westerly is famous, are made by the outer walls of the shallow, reef-like salt water pools that lie along the ocean coast bringing many summer visitors to enjoy the peace and beauty of undisturbed landscapes and the cultural life of the town.

Downtown Westerly has a wealth of attractions including a famous library, marvelous granite buildings, the Westerly Chorus and Wilcox Park, which hosts outdoor festivals and concerts throughout much of the year. Activities abound at nearby Misquamicut Beach and Watch Hill. Outdoor enthusiasts can also choose between five golf courses and nine deep water marinas for sailing and boating in Narragansett Bay. Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos are only minutes away. A vibrant community life, many summer activities and easy access to all points on the East Coast makes Westerly an attractive destination for year round residents and summer visitors alike.

Westerly's primary industries today are textiles and tourism, but historically, Westerly was also famous for its granite, mined from local quarries. Granite mining put Westerly on the map, producing some of the finest blue granite in the world, in addition to the more commonplace pinks and reds that were used in the battlefields of Gettysburg and in city squares and town buildings throughout the United States.
